I've been wondering about something, is there a particular type of jewelry you tend to wear in one season but not another? For example, I tend to wear leather and cloth bracelets more in the summer than the winter. . . I have had a little run on orders of Swirl Hoops recently, which always makes me wonder about the zeitgeist and how people come to suddenly want one thing or another. I just came back from California, where I have been for the last couple of weeks to be with my father at the end of his life. My mother and all of my siblings were there with him as well, and it was a very powerful and excruciatingly sad experience. He was 90 years old and in ill health, had had an extremely full and amazing life, and died on his own terms in the way that he wanted. I don't think any of us can ask for more than that. But I am still processing it all, and I guess I probably will be for a long time. You may have noticed I've been a little absent around here recently, and now you know why. I usually try to keep my posts here kind of light and jewelry focused. But it has felt disingenuous to be posting about jewelry as if nothing was wrong, so I felt I ought to just fess up and share what's been going on. My dad was kind of an important guy in the world of wine, so for those who are interested I will change the link in my profile to one of my favorite pieces that was written about his life upon his death. The work of Alexander Calder was one of the first things to inspire me to be a jewelry designer, so it is high time I named a design after him. And although this design does require soldering, which his work never did, I still hope the simplicity of the form and the scale of the design would have appealed to him. One of the things I love most about jewelry design is creating new mechanisms. I must have some kind of (well)hidden engineer gene. Since jewelry has to be functional as well as beautiful there can be interesting challenges to make something that both looks and works the way you want it to. That's why I am so excited about these new earrings. See how the ear wire is attached at the top creating a sort of secure hinge, allowing for both security and great movement. Brooklyn. 💚💚 We were supposed to go to California last week, but then our littlest got the flu 3 days before we were supposed to fly. We were very sad. But then he shook it off in time for us to snatch our vacation out of the jaws of death and escape to Brooklyn for a long weekend. Aaaahhh! Putting yourself out there is SO hard sometimes, isn't it? I just spent part of the morning emailing potential wholesale accounts, and even though none of them have even really had a chance to respond yet, I am somehow already feeling anxious, and yucky about it. Thoughts like: "Did I present it in the right way? Are they even going to open it? Will they even like it enough to give it a second look if they do?" are running through my head. It is so emotionally stressful! I am generally pretty confident, and I love my work, and I am especially thrilled with my new spring collection, so why is this so hard? We have been having a really rough go around here with the sleeping recently. Sick kiddos mostly, with a added dose of bedtime revolt just to twist the knife. I don't know about you, but I do not handle lack of sleep well at all. And for me, the first thing that goes is my diet. I'm not usually a health nut or anything, but when I am tired all I want to do is eat grilled cheese and pizza and everything comfort food. But last night, miracle of miracles, this whole household slept through the night. And so this morning I had the energy to discover something that was both delicious and healthy! So much so that I had to share. It's fresh goat cheese on crusty bread with honey and walnuts. So good! Same necklace, same morning, all natural-light shots, in 3 different rooms in my house. Wintertime can be tough for photography because it is so dark most of the time, and the light coming in through the window is so cold. (Summer can be tough too, because the grass outside reflects green in the photos) The top one is in my studio, which faces north. You can see why I began wandering, literally #chasinglight to try to find something warmer and more appealing. . .
