This view right here is a thing of serious happy making. I'm sitting at my new desk, in my new studio, looking across the room at my new photo area. It has a white top table on casters to be able to roll around easily to catch the best natural light. Off to the side is a little 3 tiered rolling cart to hold all my props, lenses and other camera accessories. No more skulking around from room to room, trailing debris, looking for an open surface in good light for me. Do you ever think about the small things, or the people you may have known only briefly, that have had a huge impact on the direction of your life? Sometimes I start to think about these things and it kind of blows my mind. First off, I started making jewelry by mistake. The sculpture class I signed up for in art school during a semester in Mexico fell through, and the only other class that met at the same time was metal smithing. Also, bear with me for a minute now, the girlfriend of the best friend of my college boyfriend introduced me to my first employer in the jewelry business in New York, which launched me onto the path I've been happily following for 15 years. When I look back at these two instances they look to me like the tiny switch in a model train set that switches the train to another track. Maybe if I'd met other people I would now be a dental hygienist. Or a lawyer. Or who knows what! Or maybe I'd still somehow have become a jeweler living in rural Vermont. Finally put some art up on the wall over my alcove desk in my studio! I started rearranging furniture and hanging art in my house this weekend and even though it's Monday now I #cantstopwontstop I've been collecting little treasure from favorite makers for ages, and it it so fun to see some of them come together. Also I made that little barn board and copper shelf to hold said treasures this morning. Metal really is a wonderful material to work with: such instant gratification! I'm thinking of adding a wall accessory section to my website, with little shelves and wall hangings. I can't tell you how happy I am to finally be able to go outside and gather pretty colorful things for photo props that are neither brown sticks or rocks. (I've even been know to get desperate enough to try to use a snowball for a photo prop. It's very tricky, what with the rapid melting.) Spring comes late to Vermont, and this year has been later than most. But the sun finally decided to show its face this afternoon, so I dropped everything and ran outside with clippers and a basket. I spent part of today working on something totally different and fun: a #wip collaboration with the super talented girls from @thisisovercoats (Have you guys been listening to them? If not, go check them out right now. I'll wait.) This is a prototype for a bracelet they expressed interest in featuring their O logo. I don't know what they think yet, because they haven't seen it yet, but I am posting it already because I am psyched about how it came out. Both as a version of their logo, and on its own as a piece of jewelry. I'll be sending this sample over to them tomorrow, as well as some fun earrings to wear on upcoming dates the road. Is there anything more inspiring, more filled with endless possibilities than a bright empty room? Here's a peek at the progress in the second half of my new studio. Doesn't it just make you want to go in there and take a big deep breath? My husband has put a lot of hours into this process, in between all of his other responsibilities, and I can't thank him enough! Not long now before I get to spread out into this beauty. It is just needing its last coats of paint, and some light fixtures. Anybody out there have a good idea for task oriented ceiling fixtures? I have the hardest time choosing things like that.
